Black Cockatoos

To the Aboriginal Peoples cockatoos represent illumination, they are companions and guides through darkness and accompany the deceased to the afterlife. In their creation story, the cockatoo is the first creature to ever die, and lends understanding that death is a part of transformation and immortality is gained through the process of rebirth and change. Cockatoos are important in the cycle of birth, death and rebirth, seen in their feasting, their carrying and spreading of native seeds for the next season. Black Cockatoos symbolise sacred surrendering, encouraging  the facing of fears; the practice of acceptance and going with the (inevitable) flow of life, in this way, creating spaces for more opportunities as they present themselves.

Cockatoos gather in loud squawking ‘cackles’ and are a rich symbol of partnerships, security in one's group; and their antics demonstrate the traits of mischief and curiosity.
